Most product certification follows the same arc everywhere: identify which schemes and standards apply, test the product against them at an accredited lab, compile a technical file as evidence, obtain the certificate or make a declaration of conformity, apply the required mark and labeling, then keep the approval valid as rules and the product change.
Certification rules change constantly because the technical standards behind them are revised, governments introduce or tighten schemes, transition deadlines arrive, and new product categories like wireless and connected devices get brought into scope.

To sell most regulated products in the European Union you apply CE marking, which means meeting the relevant EU directives and regulations, testing against harmonized standards, compiling a technical file, and signing an EU declaration of conformity.

Asia-Pacific is many distinct schemes, not one.

Bringing a product to market in more than one country means meeting more than one set of rules. There is no single worldwide certificate. Each country or trading bloc decides which products are regulated, names the test standards they must meet, and runs its own conformity scheme with its own mark. For electronics, three families of requirements recur almost everywhere: electromagnetic compatibility, so the product neither emits harmful interference nor is disrupted by it; electrical and product safety, so it cannot shock or overheat; and, for anything with a radio, spectrum and radio-type approval, so it uses the airwaves legally.
Global market access is the discipline of mapping and obtaining all the approvals a product needs for the markets on your plan. Done well, it is built into the design and budget from the start, reuses test evidence across markets that share standards, and sequences the work so nothing stalls at a border. Although the details differ by country, the process is remarkably consistent. First, scope: classify the product by its function and every radio and electrical feature, then map which schemes and standards apply in each target market. Second, test: representative samples go to an accredited laboratory for electromagnetic-compatibility, safety, and any radio testing, with pre-compliance checks first to catch failures cheaply. Third, document: compile a technical file, the test reports, product description, standards applied, and conformity evidence, that regulators and certification bodies rely on.
Fourth, certify and mark: depending on the scheme, the manufacturer either self-declares conformity or obtains a third-party certificate or registration, then applies the correct mark and labeling for each market. Fifth, maintain: approvals must be kept valid as the product, the standards, and the rules change, since a design tweak or a revised standard can invalidate a certificate. Treating certification as a one-time event rather than an ongoing responsibility is a common and avoidable source of trouble.
In the European Union, most regulated products carry the CE mark, which is the manufacturer's declaration that the product meets every applicable piece of EU legislation, commonly product safety, electromagnetic compatibility, restricted substances, and, for radios, the Radio Equipment Directive, supported by testing against harmonized standards and a technical file. For most electronics this is a self-declaration route, with the manufacturer legally responsible, though some higher-risk products require an independent notified body.
Great Britain runs its own UKCA mark, legally separate from CE, with its own declaration and in some cases its own approved bodies, while Northern Ireland has distinct arrangements. The detailed rules and the acceptance of CE in Great Britain have changed over time, so the two should be planned separately and checked against current guidance. The EU also generally requires a responsible economic operator established in the Union, which non-EU manufacturers must arrange.
In the United States, the FCC regulates interference and radio: ordinary digital devices meet emission limits, while products with a radio need FCC certification, a filing through a Telecommunication Certification Body, and an FCC ID on the product. Canada parallels this under ISED, with IC certification for radio products and its own identifiers; the testing overlaps heavily, so campaigns are often planned to cover both markets, but the approvals are separate.
The surprise for manufacturers used to Europe is that FCC does not cover product safety. The United States has no single federal safety mark for most electronics; electrical safety is handled separately through recognized testing-laboratory certification that retailers and insurers effectively require. Planning North America means handling FCC and IC for interference and radio, and treating safety certification as its own distinct workstream from the start.
Asia-Pacific is the region that most rewards careful, country-by-country planning, because the variation is so wide. China layers SRRC for radios and CCC for many products, often with Chinese-recognized testing and a local approval holder. India requires BIS registration for a steadily growing list of electronics, tested in Indian laboratories. South Korea consolidates safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and radio under the KC mark. Japan has its own mature radio, telecom, and electrical-safety regimes.
Elsewhere, Malaysia uses SIRIM, and Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore each maintain their own radio and product approvals, while Australia and New Zealand simplify part of the picture with the single RCM covering safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and radio through supplier registration. There is no regional shortcut and Western approvals do not transfer automatically, so each target market must be scoped on its own terms, with attention to in-country testing and local-holder rules.
Latin America is led by Brazil's ANATEL homologation for radio and telecom products, which requires testing and, typically, a local Brazilian entity to hold the approval, alongside separate electrical-safety requirements. Mexico uses NOM standards plus its own radio and telecom rules, Argentina has its own regimes, and other markets vary from well-established to still-developing. Much of the requirement is administrative and in-country, so a product can be technically compliant yet unable to ship without a local holder, an in-country report, or correct labeling.
The Middle East and Africa are similarly a patchwork. The Gulf states combine regional product-safety arrangements with country-by-country telecom type approval, South Africa splits ICASA for radio and telecom from NRCS for safety, and larger African markets such as Nigeria and Kenya run their own schemes, frequently requiring local registration or a representative. Across both regions, approvals are national, several are evolving, and local presence plus current information are decisive.
